Nandana Sen's Topless scene in 'Rang Rasiya' clears Censor hurdle

Nandana Sen is all set to make history as her controversial topless scene in her forthcoming film, Rang Rasiya, has been approved by the Indian censor board.

The film Rang Rasiya is the story of the legendary painter Raja Ravi Verma played by Randeep Hooda and his muse Sugandha played by Nandana. Sugandha used to pose nude for Verma.

The film required scenes of frontal nudity and Nandana’s nude scenes are very crucial to the film’s narrative. Nandana’s nude scenes form “the very core of the film” probably thats why it narrowly escaped the Censor’s scissors.

Nandana confirms the news and says, “I’m not surprised by the decision at all. That scene forms the very core of the film. Rang Rasiya is itself about censorship of art. The political message as well as the emotional drama in our film revolves entirely around that particular scene, making it absolutely essential to the narrative.” “Everyone who has seen the film has commented to us about how the scene complements the film, so why would the censor board think any differently?” she added.

In a quick chat with Ayandrali Dutta she speaks her heart out.

Being the daughter of a Nobel laureate, how easy or difficult has life been?
I am gifted and extremely fortunate to have such a doting father, who is so knowledgeable. Being his daughter is a happy feeling all the way. My life has been a pleasant ride. My father has been my guiding light all through and has helped me to overcome difficulties in a very calm and diligent manner. I have learnt a lot from him and inherited his style and way of thinking, which has been of great help in my acting career so far.

After 2005, we are seeing you after a long time. Any reasons for this long break?
It was a break of almost three years, but the return has been really heartening. This industry has been really warm and affectionate. There was no specific reason for the break... I just needed to be with myself and spend quality time with my family. I have grown professionally and have gained a true insight into my personality which will help in my second innings. I’m hoping for the best.

What made you take up the project Rang Rasiya ?
Rang Rasiya has a really beautiful and innovative script. As an actress, I have always wanted to portray different characters and widen my horizons. With such an exuberant co-star Randeep Hooda, and Aanand Mahendroo, I did not want to miss out on the opportunity of being a part of the project. I loved playing the on-screen muse. I would truly not have wished for anything better than Rang Rasiya to re-start my stint in Bollywood.

Tell us something about the character Sughanda you play in Rang Rasiya.
Sugandha is a charmer, a character that is very close to my heart. In the film, she is the muse for this extraordinary artist Ravi Verma, who paints her portrait keeping mythological thoughts in mind. Both of them strike a definite chord, which gives rise to passion and emotions between them.

What made you write the screenplay for Forever and So ? Are you planning to take it up seriously in the long run?
Forever is an amazing concept and to write for it was a privilege for me. I am always game for writing, so took the opportunity when I got it. Forever will be loved by all. It’s really different and refreshing, something that the viewers might not have come across often. I don't plan much and believe in crossing the bridge when I reach there. In the long run, I may seriously take it up as an alternate profession.

You have come up with some bold scenes in Rang Rasiya . How comfortable are you with your role?
Doing bold scenes is not a limitation for me. It has been really well picturised and made the film more enjoyable to watch. Often, these scenes are requirements of the scripts. They provide a flow to the story. Otherwise, no movie can sell just because of bold scenes.

In spite of working in a quite a few films, most of them went unnoticed. What say?
All the films I have done in the past were really awesome, but since the audiences have their viewpoints and criteria for judgment, I can't debate that. I don't mind my films not getting too much attention but I hope the message of my films have been well received by people, which is the sole aim. I believe in trying to work on the audience's opinion so that I can give them a better performance and gain their blessings and praise.

Any role in particular that you wish to play?
I am open for any good scripts and roles, specially those that would help me be remembered as a good actress. I might like to play a social activist, who reaches out to the masses. I believe social activists can make the higher-ups understand ground realities and urge for swift action.

What keeps Nandana so energetic?
Being part of such a demanding entertainment industry is enough to keep one on their toes! Having rigorous work schedules leaves me exhausted at times, but I try to work-out and do yoga to push up my energy levels. I stick to healthy eating habits. I believe in the saying "health is wealth". So, to keep myself energized, I stick to a healthy lifestyle.

What are the currents projects in your bag?
I have signed some prestigious projects. One of them is the series Sharpe's Peril, where I play Maharani Padmini and am paired opposite Amit Behl. It’s based on the bestselling historical novels written by Bernard Cornwell.
